Personal History: Draco grew up in the lap of luxury surrounded by everything that he could have wanted. But his life was governed by the rules of who he could talk to and how he might talk to them. His childhood consequently was filled more with time spent alone or with people anyone could scarcely call friends through the formalities that they all maintained.
From the first meeting with Harry Potter on the train, Draco did his best to live up to image that had been carefully cultivated in him during childhood. Harry Potter was the epitome of everything that had gone wrong and he did his best undermine his credibility and harm his success in any small way. But the attacks were petty for a part of him was jealous for the ease Harry made good friends and cut a place for himself and even as they went through school of Harry’s ability to do what he thought was right no matter what he faced. . The more that he watched Harry and began to question whether Harry might not be right and the meaner and darker Draco grew to ignore the feelings.
During the summer following his father’s imprisonment, Draco found himself awoken one night by his Aunt Belatrix and told to get dressed. At two o’clock in the morning with a wand directed at his mother’s heart Draco swore lifelong loyalty to Voldemort. As Voldemort branded Draco with the Dark Mark he told chillingly of the task he must complete for the life of his family. There was a month of the summer left to go and with Voldemort living in the house, he had no way of seeking help from anyone even if he had known how to. Instead, he immersed himself in his father’s private library with Bellatrix, learning the Dark Arts and at night in his room planning various schemes to kill Dumbledore.
At first the schemes Draco put together were simple and obvious. In a way he wanted to be caught, he wanted someone to take control. But no one appeared to notice and as the pressure from the Death Eaters grew Draco was forced to put larger plans into action. When Harry struck out with the curse in the bathroom he realized he was truly alone and Snape’s offers only made him suspicious, he thought it was Voldemort’s way of putting temptation in his way.
The memory of the night on the Astronomy Tower continues to haunt Draco to this day. Dumbledore’s offer and kindness in the face of his fear continued to haunt him till he took the step of bravery and refused to identify Harry’s group when they were brought to the Manor by Fenrir. He spent the summer in a state of nervous tension waiting for retribution for his failure and trying to endure the constant presence of Voldemort.
Even a return to a new term of Hogwarts which should have given Draco a breather was a new form of torture. The Malfoy name was mud and held no protection for him. Whether Voldemort ordered it or whether the Carrows took sadistic pleasure in it, Draco found his days filled still with pain, and the mental torture that his parents might be killed while he was safely hidden in the school.
Draco now prefers to keep to himself, working on potions within his own house. He finds it better to cope alone than to the world. After all that has happened he is not sure what his place should be.
Losses during the war: Most of his family and friends are either dead or in Azkaban.
